This option is the same as the standard SSL certificate but with the advantage of it being able to function on multiple subdomains. For example, if you have different parts of your site on section1.yourdomain.com and section2.yourdomain.com – the wildcard SSL option will cover all of them.
This is ideal for large / high traffic sites and provides a full green address bar in your visitors browser for the ultimate in visitor confidence. An extended SSL has been known to lead to increased sales and conversions. If you want to instill trust there is no better option than the EVSSL.

Yes, if you want to accept any form of payments even if using a third party processor, you must have at least a basic SSL certificate.
You will need a separate SSL certificate for each fully qualified domain name on your hosting account. If you are using sub domains such as site1.yourdomain.com and site2.yourdomain.com then a wildcard cert will suffice.
